Intergenerational Arts and Minds Groups

Intergenerational Arts and Minds Groups

Establishing intergenerational relationships through art

What Are Intergenerational Arts And Minds Groups?

The intergenerational arts and minds groups facilitated by SJFS are art- or discussion-based programs that pair older adults, usually residents of Menorah Park, with younger middle school, high school, and college students. Together, the pairs discuss topics, make art, and establish relationships.

How Can Intergenerational Arts And Minds Groups Help?

Older adults, especially those in long-term care facilities, may lack the opportunities to interact with those outside of their age group. Similarly, younger people may also lack access to people of the “old-old” population. These groups allow both parties to learn about the other and become more familiar with their social, emotional, and physical needs and capabilities.

The younger individuals also have the opportunity to learn the skills of interacting with older adults with specific needs. Many of the older adults in these programs have some level of cognitive impairment, so students first learn about the changes that occur in the brain and how to effectively communicate and support older adults experiencing cognitive impairment or dementia.

Why Are Intergenerational Arts and Minds Groups Important?

Many young people are familiar with being helped and supported by those older than they are, but the experience of assisting an older adult may be new for them. This can give the young person and the older adult new perspectives on the value of the other generations.
