Support services for people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds

What is Creative Arts Therapy?

Creative arts therapy is a type of therapy practiced by licensed mental health professionals that use the creative arts to inform their therapy practices in order to help their clients achieve a wide range of goals. Creative arts therapists train in both psychotherapy and creative arts, and specialize in a particular creative arts field.

At SJFS our licensed creative arts therapist specializes in music and is also a board-certified music therapist. Click to learn more about music therapy at SJFS

In creative arts therapy, traditional talk therapy/counseling is combined with creative arts experiences and music therapy techniques. The music or art making is as frequent as the client desires and is most helpful to an individual who might be a candidate for talk therapy but would also benefit from the addition of music or other creative art modalities.  This approach is especially beneficial for children and teens because it allows them to explore the feelings they have difficulty expressing through words in a non-threatening experience.

Common areas addressed in creative arts therapy sessions:
  • Mood regulation/dysregulation
  • Self-expression
  • Developing positive coping strategies
  • Self-esteem and self-exploration
  • Independence and decision-making skills
  • Grief/loss
  • Trauma
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Anger management

Counseling for Creatives

Our licensed creative arts therapist also offers counseling to address the mental health needs of artists, musicians, and other creative individuals. Counseling can help address anxiety including performance anxiety, creative & career blocks, self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and maintaining life/work balance.

Cost

Services are paid out-of-pocket. A sliding scale fee may be available for individual sessions. Depending on your insurance, you may be able to submit a claim for out-of-network reimbursement.
